Any one who knows me knows that I love food and I love surrounding myself with like-minded women. This Sunday I found myself getting a high dose of just that. My girl Bemnet invited me to a small group for ladies to have real conversation while supporting a local business.
Nicole Allen, the owner of Roots on Tap, hosted us in her juice bar located just across the street from the Fair Park Music Hall. This gem is also right around the corner from one of my favorite live music spots, Sandaga 813. It’s no secret that South Dallas has been categorized as a food desert, suffering from the effects of gentrification in nearby areas (which will continue to spread further south, pushing the residents out). That’s why Nicole, and Roots on Tap, and other places like it are so important. Unlike many of the outside businesses that make camp in the South, Nicole is a Dallas native whose heart belongs to the city. She is passionate about creating revenue and jobs for the people who live in the neighborhood, while bringing fresh fruits and veggies to those who might not have access to them otherwise.
Roots on Tap features a variety of beverages from smoothies to juices, and infused alkaline water. You can also stop in and get a snack to go with your drink of choice. I enjoyed a refreshing “Macharita” while the women in the room shared their passions and goals, and discussed ways we could improve our own lives while strengthening our communities.
I believe this is the beginning of a fruitful series of conversations that will lead to action and changed lives for the women who attend. I know that I was inspired to get even more focused on my life goals and the impact I want to make in the community.
I left that place with a full heart, and super hydrated skin! Thank you to Dr. Froswa Booker-Drew for gifting each of us with a copy of Ready for a Revolution: 30 Days to Jolt Your Life. Thank you to Nicole for hosting us at your lovely shop. I will definitely be back. Thank you Bemnet, my sister, for thinking of me and allowing me to be a part of it.
