Self-Care for the New Mama

Hey lovelies! I hope all is well with you- all things considered. I’ve been keeping it lowkey with the fam and enjoying this transition into fall that feels more like spring in Texas.

As a new mama it has been incredibly easy to take care of all things baby and completely let myself fall by the wayside. I mean at one point I was even skipping showers and I am NOT one of those people who can afford to skip a shower. As of late, I’ve gotten into a much better habit and sustainable lifestyle of making sure I take care of Kaisha too. It’s far from a routine because I ebb and flow as needed. It’s more of a rolling scale. I basically pick at least one thing everyday to do for me. It may only be for ten minutes at a time but it gives me a boost. I may not have time for the 4-hour marathon spa days I had as a bachelorette but taking a little time for myself each day makes all the difference.

The most important part of my self care routine is taking my supplements. I used to be one of those people who felt like it was excessive to be taking a million vitamins all day. I mean, I went through my entire pregnancy without taking prenatals. I know. Crazy. But let me tell you, I have changed my tune. My iron levels plummeted. I felt like a literal zombie prior to taking my supplements. I was completely lethargic and had absolutely no will or motivation to do anything outside of what was necessary to take care of my child. I started boosting my iron and I am back to life. Huge transformation. So, for those suffering from post baby blues, please make sure you are, at the very least, replenishing your blood and organs. They’ve been through a lot.

Now that I’ve got my energy back, I make sure to make time to shower (and get dressed!) everyday. I choose whether I want to couple my shower with shaving, foot scrubbing or hair washing. I’ve also been using cooler water in the shower and it has definitely improved my alligator skin, but that’s a different post for a different day.

I’ve added a daily walk to my routine as well- weather permitting. It’s key for me to get fresh air and sunshine consistently, so I pair that with a stroll to get my newly iron-replenished blood circulating. It’s also incredibly relaxing for the babe. She’s usually ready to take a nap by the time we get back inside. If I can’t go for a walk, I spend some time on the balcony since it’s covered.

I’ve also started back one of my favorite hobbies- reading. I slacked majorly on this over the last year or so, so it’s so exciting to get back into the swing. I’m not knocking out a book in a week like I used to but even if I just get a few minutes in, it’s good enough for me.

And lastly, I have started cooking again. Lord knows I had absolutely no desire to do so for months but I’m back. I refuse to make anything complicated right now but doing anything at all is more than I was so I’m happy about it.

And that’s all folks! I feel so much better and it all started with vitamins. It just goes to show you how interwoven our physical and mental health is. I encourage you to do your best to take care of yourself!
